Last Minute Decision to Make a Short Haul

... and we won't be Boondocking...

Heidi and Buck are entered in an Australian Shepherd Club Agility Trial this weekend. We've made a pretty much last moment decision to haul on down to the west side of Denver for the weekend... They've got regular RV Spaces with FHU at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds... so that's where we're headed.

We've been settin' here for so long... things are a lil' discombobulated... and our breakin' camp skills are a mite rusty... but I'm sure we'll get drug out of the mud here... without leavin' too many parts behind...

This will be the first haul of the Eagle... with the '99... so we'll see how it handles its' job.

The Bikes, this time... will be left parked here for the weekend... I'm not real comfortable with that. :o) I'm about two things these days... Motorcycles... and anything having to do with... uh ... Motorcycles! :o)

OK... one last thing... a comment made yesterday has me thinkin' that some folks think I'm only a down on employers... radical grumpy Ol' Biker... and folks... it ain't so.

The thing is... I'm not just an employee... I am also an employer... Heidi and I have been "Employers" for nigh on to fifteen years... at her store... -but we've found the "Bead Business" does better if I'm not there much... seems I'm politically oriented a mite different than a lot of our customers :o) - so I work elsewhere... at least for a lil' while longer...

Anyhoo... here's the deal...

Honor, loyalty and appreciation... between Employers and Employees... is a two way street. I despise... disloyal people... I also reject those who "demand" respect...

Whether it's Employer or Employee it's the same... you get what you earn... demand what you've not earned... and you'll get a horse laugh from me.

An employee gives an hour of good performance, for an hours pay... period... The Employer, has an equal responsibility to pay an honest wage for that time...

Beyond that... The employer, might be risking a bit of money in the enterprise... but the Employees are surrendering a grievously, HUGE piece of their LIVES... for the Benefit of the Employer... The Employees are, by a wide margin... the Heavier "Investors" in the enterprise... and putting the greater, and far more valuable portion at risk. (Remember... this is the opinion of an Employer... Me!)

Any Employer worth a damn... had better recognize that Fact and behave accordingly... or he/she ain't worth pig poop to this Ol' Buster.

If you want loyalty from folks... you can only get it one of two ways... you either buy it from 'em with the loyalty you give them... or you flat out earn it... actually about the same thing... You can not demand it simply 'cause you pay 'em wages... Money don't buy nothin' but time...

... and respect is the same... you can not demand it... if you Earn it... you'll get it...

My problem... with what I believe to be the majority of employers, is their lack of loyalty for their employees... Their loyalty is only to the bottom line... that is pathetic, and despicable...

At our store... we would not have our store, were it not for the Employees, giving us great pieces of their lives... doing work for US... we pay 'em for it... as they are due... but... when things get tough... we take the tough times... just like they do... We do what the business allows (you have to have balance) to give them flexibility to enjoy opportunities in their own lives... if the bottom line suffers, so be it... we will not betray the employees that keep us in business... and watch our backs, when we are not there...

We don't go crazy... we don't give 'em the store... But... we make damn sure they know... how valuable they are to us... and how... we aren't gonna just cut 'em loose... to protect our wallet...

The result? They do what they can to protect the business... 'cause they know... the business "Knows"... it NEEDS Them... and is Loyal... To Them.

As Forest Gump once said; "Thats all I have to say 'bout that!" :o)

and now... I gotta get this rig ready to haul!

Springtime in the Rockies... for an RVing Biker... is Great... Until it SUCKS!

Yesterday it was 80 Cowboy Freaking degrees... Almost couldn't get my Raider to turn in to the parking lot... when I got to the day job... Gorgeous, Sunny day... a man should be splittin' the wind... or... splittin' firewood in a fine RV Boondocking camp...

... NOT... sellin' nuts an' bolts an plumbing parts... for "The Bosses"... who one time after another... show their complete and total lack of appreciation and loyalty... to the poor, workin' buggers... that are makin' them... the "Bosses"... richer ever' day!

... and that's the end of that lil' mini-tirade! :o)

So... back to Springtime in the Rockies...

80 yesterday... and THIS is what my Red Headed Raider looked like when I opened my eyes this morning!

It ain't right I tell you!... A fella shouldn't get teased by days like that! Me an' the Boss are gonna have to set down and have a discussion!

It's like... OK... pick a day... any day! THIS is now spring!... From this point till the next winter... the onliest thing gonna be fallin' out of the sky is rain... and airplanes!

Quit this sunburn on Wednesday... and frostbite on Thursday malarky!

The Boss and I are gonna have that confab... but... I'm not holdin' any high hopes he's gonna listen much to my complainin'... I've come to the conclusion... that though many folks think he's the fire and brimstone sort...

...I'm believin' he's more of a Robin Williams, jokester and prankster... can't you just hear his gigglin' in the Thunder? :o) Yes Sir! ... I'd have to say he's about LIVING! ... and havin' a good time on this Ride of Your Life...

... so... as soon as all that mud firms up... I'll knock the snow off Ol' Red... put my knees in the Wind! ... and giggle through the Thunder! :o)

... You know what? check out this Video for a bit of a pick me up to make it a better day!

Keeping My Fingers Crossed...

Well... today is the end of my most recent procrastination... I'm up against the end of the Temp Tag on the '99 Cummins we bought a while back... Thing is... to get it registered, I've got to get an emissions test completed...

... and that there is what I've been procrastinating on. Living in Weld county, no test has been needed for better than seven years... but now, with the house gone... and though we are still parked in Weld, our mailing address has been changed to the peoples republic of Larimer county... over in Fort Collins...

... and though they don't require emissions on all their cars... those nasty, smokin' Diesels have to be tested! aaaaarrrrrghh! ... the thing is... Diesels put out heavy, sooty emissions, that don't hardly go anywhere... maybe 20 feet and then that heavy particulate stuff settles out and hits the ground... not floatin' around in the air... like the stuff comin' out of their Lil' Prius go carts... :o) ... but those folks over there... "Can See" it for a bit... so it must be bad... right? ...

Hate to be the one to break it to 'em... but it's the One You Don't See that whacks you! :o)

Anyhoo... I'm heading over to get the test done this morning... so I can get the permanent plates on and be done with it...

So... I better put down the coffee cup... pull on my jeans... and get that Dodge warmed up!
***edit***No need to worry! Passed through with flyin' colors!... tomorrow... the plates! $$$ Ouch!***

Wind is Down... Sun is Out... Mud is Dryin' up... Time for that Motorcycle to Cruise!

So today... it's time to Ride... Which has pretty much become my reason for RV Boondocking! ... and not a bad one either.

Having a rig... in our case, a fairly old rig... which allows us a pretty low cost of living... compared to what it was... with that house sittin' on us... allows for more... MOTORCYCLE Time! :o) ... weather permitting.

'course for me... there ain't much 'weather' that keeps me off the bike... Heidi's a 'fair weather biker'... but me? ... as long as the road ain't iced up... I'm knees in the wind...

Uh... I forgot Mud... I... Don't... Like... Mud... Ice and Mud...

Hmmm... I always wondered what the Boss was thinkin' when he made Packrats... Why? What the Hell good are they? was he just in a bad mood that day?... same thing with ice an' mud... Bad Mood?... or just a Devilish Prankster? :o)

Having an RV rig will also give us the best of base camps from which we can sortie out on day trips...Can't wait to push through the rain on the Olympic Penninsula! :o) ... or Follow Freedom Road... on the Alcan... a 38+ year dream... that may be coming close...

As in all things... we're still workin' out the kinks... some things work... some things don't... some things ya just smack into a wall goin' Nine-Oh... but you get up... touch up the scratches in the paint... put your nose back in the wind... twist the throttle... and follow that puppy wherever it goes. :o)

A fine RV and a Finer Motorcycle... the perfect Team!

Flowers in May?...Sure... Unless those Purties Drown First!

'Tween the rain... and the wind... I'm as weary of spring as I was of winter...

Curse me for a grinch... but I'm startin' to pray for a drought! ... Work to do, that won't get done, until the weather cooperates.

The rig is shimmyin' like a Las Vegas showgirl from the forty mile an hour breeze... and you sink nigh to your ankles when you step outside... then, last night, they posted a flood warning that runs through Sunday... Lovely spring weather...

grump, grump, grump... Ya gotta go with what you're good at... right? :o)

Guess I'll just keep lowerin' the level in the coffee can... and see if I can get some 'puter work done... while hopin' for a lil' more sun... fillin' up more of a day.

Well... I guess there'll be plenty of flowers in May!

Don't know how much rain we've gotten... but... every little bit there's a pair of elephants... a couple of giraffes, two orangutans, a pair of doves, and a brace of reeeeeeallly slow turtles... tryin' to get on board!

... and we ain't, parked in a 'developed' spot... it's a bit of ground off the end of their garage, out on the Colorado Plains... not a graded, surfaced drive of some sort... point bein'... it is... soooooooft!

Looked out the window this morning... and I can see juuuust a mite of the red roof of lil' red... stickin' out of the mud... Yeah... it's wet 'round here...

Picked up the seat and the back rest from the Motorcycle seat shop yesterday afternoon... and the work they did looks really good... but haven't put 'em on the bike yet... It's sitting out in the rain, safe under its' cover... waitin' for weather that's just a lil' better to try 'em out in. :o)

I may be a bit too hard core for some folks... what with ridin' that two wheeler all winter long... but I ain't totally stupid! :o)

Hell... I don't believe I could even get that asphalt munchin' monster to the pavement from here! She likes to run... and ain't no road that'll whup her... but... that two or three miles of dirt between here and the pavement.. would not be called a 'road' by much of anyone... today! :o)

So... I'm gonna suck down a couple gallons of that Dark Sumatra Coffee I bought at Trade Joe's in February... and spend the day, punchin' buttons on this Ol' Laptop!

The Leak that Won't go Away...

Well, when I replaced that broken valve a few weeks ago... I thought I'd finally solved the mystery leak in the pump compartment... one more time I was wrong...

That sucker is still there... So... I now have a new plan... win the lottery and hire a plumber! :o)

Naw... What I'm going to do is first... rework the access to that compartment, so a fella can even get in there to fix anything that needs fixin'.

and second... most likely replace the current pump, and upgrade the connections to it, while I'm in there...

That pump is 9 years old, and been used some lil' bit... so it don't owe me anything... I can juuuuust see, with the poor access... a bit of mineralization, toward the bottom of the pump housing... I think... maybe... there is a seal at that end that may be the culprit...

anyhoo... the plan is to cut in a new access door that will be sized sufficient to allow reasonable access to a fairly important part of the rigs systems, and ease that replacement. 'course... as soon as I do that... I'll probably never need to get in there again... right? :o)

Finally got back in front of last months Visitor count... kind of an obsession of mine... get up in the morning... grind the beans... make the coffee... fire up the laptop... log in to SBI! and see what's happening... So... another record month of Visitors in the making! :o)

The Easter weekend you guys were all spending time with your families I guess, and not visitin' me... :o) so there was a bit of a dip... but now... Spring is Springin', people are gettin' Hitch itch... and urges for the Great American Road Trip!... and folks are knockin' on my door... more than ever before... Sweet!

... and now that Spring is finally comin' alive... all those folks that hide their Motorcycles in the Garage all winter, are gettin' their riding parts warmed up... Lookin' at their Motorcycle gear... thinkin' 'bout what some call, "Riding Season"... which for me is all year 'round... as long as the road ain't reeeeeaaaally icy :o) ... so... my Ribbon of Highway blog, along with the Motorcycle Touring site it's on... is picking up nicely too...

I sure have come to enjoy this 'Website Writing' gig... something I never would have guessed just five years ago... to tell the truth it's pretty awesome... To finally be able to put all the words rattling around in my head to some productive use! :o)

...and the way it's treating my thin lil' wallet don't hurt my feelings any either...

That a word butcher like me, can truly see a decent income growing out of such efforts, is as awesome to me as the plain Ol' pleasure I get from just building the sites in the first place...

But...it ain't doin' the whole job... yet... so I better go get ready for the day job...

The good new there is... I can see ... the day job's 'Days'... are numbered! :o)

Stirring up a Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Conversion Storm! :o)

What the heck... I'm bored! :o)

I've never hauled our 30' Jayco with anything other than the Gooseneck Conversion hitch we have... and I've dragged it something on the order of 50,000 miles... and 10,000 or so of those with a 550lb motorcycle sitting on the motorcycle carrier I built on the tail end. (another thing they said "you can't do" safely...) ... uh... with no change in handling I might add... and... I Don't have a heavy, or re-enforced pin box.

A Gooseneck Hitch is so superior in capability, to my mind, and so simple in function, I don't know why anyone would prefer a fifth wheel setup.

Now, I know, it's all over the net... people squallin' that it puts more stress on the pin box and such 'stuff'...I've even heard a fella claim it made his trailer unstable... ??? Huh? ... if your trailer is unstable... you better look real close at your tires, your axles, and your loading... 'cause you've got something real wrong, and it ain't the hitch.

If it wasn't unstable before changing to a gooseneck... the gooseneck conversion is Not gonna make it so!

Now, for that pin box stress thing... I've asked many times... and the answer to the question "How?" has always been; "Well... it does." ... they'll never say How... sorry... ya'll gotta do better than that.

Think about this... for a minute... for yourself...

We're talking about leverage here... simple geometry... To increase the stress... the Lever has to either get longer... or the force against the Lever has to get heavier... Right?

So... if you are pulling with the same truck, at the same speed, same weights, yadda yadda yadda... that eliminates that heavier force... don't it?

So we're down to the length of the Lever... the Lever... is your Hitch. Now here's the deal... Park your truck... under your Fiver in Hitching position... now imagine the hitch is gone... The Distance between the pin box... and the bed of your truck... is the length of the Lever.

Now... whether you install a fifth wheel hitch or a fifth wheel to gooseneck conversion... that distance remains the same. Properly installed... the relationship (distance) between the truck and the pinbox should be unchanged.

The thing that does change is the articulation range of the Hitch... and the pivot point. With a Fifth Wheel the pivot is at the top... on a gooseneck... the pivot is at the bottom... the Lever length, remains the same.

The only time you're going to get leverage against the pin box...is when that articulation movement gets bound up... when it runs out of room to move. Remember, once that movement gets 'Frozen' the Lever length is the same.

A Fifth Wheel Hitch has about 5-7 degrees maximum... of available movement, side to side. I don't know for sure what the range of motion of a Gooseneck is in degrees... just that, the trailer is going to run into the side of the truck before that Gooseneck Hitch ever runs out of articulation movement.

So...what does that mean?

You're out RV Boondocking... you're pulling back into a dispersed camping site in the National Forest... and the Truck Tilts left 8 degrees... while the trailer tilts back the other way... another 8 degrees... Total difference between the truck and trailer... 16 degrees...

What happens?

If you have a Fifth Wheel Hitch: You ran out of hitch tilt at around 7 degrees... so the additional 9 degrees of movement gets slammed into your truck frame, the hitch and pin box... and the trailer frame... Wanna talk excessive stress?

If you have a Gooseneck Conversion: The gooseneck simply rotates smoothly around the ball, without issue, and you get positioned where you wanted... You back the trailer into that sweet campsite you found... and you never see any of the stress the Fifth Wheel experiences... 'cause with a goose... it ain't there!

One of the last things I want to say is this... Much has been said about pin boxes cracking and such, after making the conversion... I've looked, I've asked, I've never been able to find one...

I'm always told; "I heard about it from a guy who talked to a guy who was told by a fella that he heard about one that happened somewhere they can't remember."

My guess?... the Trailer that cracked (if it exists), was either, as are way too many, badly overloaded, and had way too heavy a pin weight to begin with... or it had a manufacturing defect.

Either way,  It was Going To Crack, no matter what... and it was simply a matter of miles... not the Hitch style

So, if a Gooseneck is so superior, why don't the Big Rigs use 'em?... a couple main reasons...
1. Ease of hookup. With a goose you have to stop precisely under the hitch to hook up... with a fifth wheel you can back into it, and it locks on automatically... something those big rig drivers like when they can't even see the hitch.

2. They stay on the pavement... They stay flat, and don't need the side to side, flexibility to go boondocking.

Recently, a fella sent me a link to a company that builds air ride hitches... I'd always thought that would be yet another improvement for Gooseneck RV Hitches... but I'd never seen it for 'em...

Well... Hensley Mfg is building what looks to me to be an awful fine air ride fifth wheel to gooseneck conversion hitch... as soon as I can fit one in my austere budget... I'm gonna give it a real hard look.

Such a hitch will take a lot of the road shock away that any hitch style endures... If you don't like my gooseneck set up... those guys make some fine Air Ride Fifth Wheel units too! :o)

What Ya'll do is your choice and your responsibility... all I'm doin' here is relating what's worked for me for a long time... Just use your own heads to sort out the 'facts'... try not to swallow too much hype... folks get hung up on defending their 'position' at all cost, and loose sight of the purpose... To Make Things Better!

... and now... I'll wait for the storm! :o)

A Grey Day Tryin' to Raise Some Ambition...

So I'll start it off with a lil' bit of Rambling...

I'm waitin' on the back seat of the Raider to be finished... with a lil' luck and no major snafus... it should be next week... Got there early but it took a lot longer than I'd figured... what can I say... once you get to schemin' on customizing a bike... you can get lost in it! :o)

Ended up having to run and get a Yamaha Backrest. (Luckily a local dealer had one in stock) The system the seat shop designed won't work very well on the Yamaha Raider seat pan... Oh Well...

... and you know me... do one thing... and it opens the door to four more ideas... Started out just the passenger seat... became adding the Yamaha backrest... and now is including, eventually the drivers seat... :o)

Before I can do the drivers seat, I have to swap out the handlebars, so I know just where I'm gonna be sitting!

It's gonna be tough... having to ride around on a custom Raider Motorcycle!

Having other issues too... some girl hollered at me as I was turning into a parking lot; "OOOOOWHEE! Nice Bike!" ... uh... don't know if it's me makin' that big red, two wheeler look good... or the bike makin' me look even more Heroric than I usually do! :o) but it's gettin' my head to swellin' some!

Oh well... just have to learn to live with it I guess.

On other news... I've gotten several emails this past week... people planning to Drop out of Society (I translate that into; "Climb off the Treadmill"), move into an RV... and go to Livin' ... rather than the just continuing to slave away, Status Quo ...

For me... that ambition is a good thing! But then, they're wanting to know, just which rig they should buy...

Whew!... How long is a piece of string?

I really haven't a clue which type of rig is best for anyone but me... and I'm fickle on that! Some days I even think just a tent and my Motorcycle would be best. :o) It sure works for Ara and Spirit.

I think of Class A's... Class C's... Pickups and Pull trailers... and always seem to settle back on our Ol' Reliable Jayco Fiver...

The thing is... each Rover... has to weigh all the things they want, or need, that rig to do... Things I may need are going to be useless to others... things I'd sacrifice, to make room for my Motorcycle(s)... are going to be absolute requirements for Molly Sue and her four Pekineses! :o)

Another often asked question, is about quality... that there is a toughie... There is a wide range of quality... but even the best makers screw up here and there... and to some degree... You get what you pay for... and what you can afford.

Our nine year Old, Jayco Eagle, is a far cry from Top-O-the-Heap. Kind of mid-range I'd guess... but, it's what we could/can afford... and you know what?... She does the Job! I've had to fix and redo a few things... but, that goes with the territory... you learn what you have to... do the best you can... and move on down the road... just don't waste too much time worryin' 'bout it.

... which brings me to where a lot of those questions really come from... I think...

I accept that a lot of folks aren't used to making a lot of decisions... Let's face it...This society has been twisted around so much, that a lot of folks have been conditioned to spend most of their lives, doing what they're told to do.

Actually stepping out, taking control, making those decisions... and breathing in True Freedom, is a new thing for 'em... and it can be a lil' intimidating... Thing is... the more you do it... the sweeter it becomes, and the better you get at it.

Enough gas for one day...

I'm Bound for Northglenn tonight... and Lakewood in the Morning...

I'll be riding to my Daughters place tonight, soon as I get off this weeks tour of duty at the hardware... We're gonna spend the night there, and then head over to the Motorcycle seat shop for our appointment at 9 tomorrow morning...

By early afternoon we should have a reworked passenger seat on the Raider... that will be juuuuuust a mite more comfortable for the person that has to sit back there...

Then... hoping for no rain... I'll roll that big two wheeler back north...

Starting to have an 'issue' with the charger for my air card... hmmm... electronics... sometimes ya just love what they can do for you... sometimes... ya'll wanna just fling the offending piece at a wall! :o)

I've got ... well I've lost count of the chargers around here... air card, laptop, camera, cell phones, ipod, shaver... even the tooth brush has a charger!... you'd think at least two of 'em would be alike... wouldn't you? ... so if one shelled on you... you could just pick up the other... and keep on workin'?

Not a chance... every damn one of 'em... is a different voltage... if not a whole different connection plug...

If that Jobs fella really wanted to do something useful... he would standardize electronic chargers! :o) talk about simplifyin' life... makes me quiver every time I reach in the drawer for the proper 'wire'... Dang thing looks like a box of snakes in there...

... and the stress of tryin' to remember which one goes with which is just plumb awful! :o)

I better get my gear ready to put in the car... no place on the Bike yet... and I gotta go sell some nuts an' bolts today... to pay for the new seat!

The Weather is Gettin' my Hitch Itchy with a bad case of Spring Fever Wanderlust

Seems like it happens every year 'bout now... don't it?

The Weather finally breaks... and whether ya'll got your winter projects done or not... I don't :o) ... Spring Fever, Hitch Itch, Wanderlust... or whatever other name you hang on it hits you, and ya can't keep your mind on anything other than... wearing some rubber off your best tires!

I have stuff that really should get done... and is less likely with each passin' day! My eyes are locked on the Road these days... better to just let 'em see some fresh asphalt for a bit... 'fore they're asked for more work... more likely to get better 'quality' production that-a-way! :o)

What keeps me 'running against the wind'?... the view that I can see forward now... I can see Freedom... just off there a few months maybe... June? July?... instead of the years I was lookin' at...

Life can be kind of like a freight train sometimes... Heavy and hard to get started... moves real slow... you gotta keep strainin' an' gruntin' at it... but if you keep your foot on the throttle... it slowly picks up speed...

Starts to build some momentum...

... then finally, one day... that sucker is rollin' along freely... and hard to stop! :o)

Still in the 'pushin' stage... but we're gettin' a lot closer.

I'll be riding down to Northglenn Wednesday night after work... We've got an appointment with a small shop in Lakewood scheduled Thursday morning... to get a fresh passenger pillion seat built for the Raider... a more proper Touring seat...

and now... I gotta go make the donuts at the current 'day job'...

How do I balance a Frugal Living Ideal against My "selling" to pay the bills?

I've been asked more than once; "Don't you feel kind of dishonest? You talk about Frugal Living... and then go to making money off advertising and trying to sell things?"

My answer? "Nope... Not even a lil' bit!"

A workable Frugal Living Ideal is like Lloyd's Mantra; "Life is a matter of balance"

When I started talking with folks in pursuit of this "Frugal Living" deal... I picked up pretty quick on something... a lot of 'em... too many of 'em, had just swapped one affliction for another... First they were running toward money... sacrificing all... and now they're runnin' away from it... and runnin' down anything that gets in their way of squeezing a dime... one extreme to the other...

... and in both cases... The Joy, of just plain ol' Living... gets lost in the commotion!

Money... damned Ol' dollars... you can't live with 'em... you can't live without! :o) ... so... What's a feller to do?

Why, hang Ol' Lloyds; "It's a matter of balance" on the issue!

Sweet!

I try to sell, promote and support... what I see to be of benefit to people. Something that will improve their lives. Along the way I try to make sure they get their moneys' worth. That, is having the proper frugal living mind set... for the girls I dance with.

And if I can make an honest living doing that... Double Sweet!

There's something, that I submit, should be your first thought when you start out pursuing a Frugal Living Philosophy. It should, in my sorta humble opinion, be your primary and foundational motivation.

That first thing is; The whole purpose, for even thinking about Frugal living, is to improve your life... to shine it up with laughter and lovin'... or why bother?

Frugal living should Not be the uncomfortable ordeal of deliberately doing without... cutting out and cutting back... with ever'thing focused on saving money.

Eliminating that focus on 'Money'... is, purty close, to bein' my focus!

I'm claiming that, what Should Be the driving philosophy, is; "How can I reduce the amount of precious Life and energy that gets wasted on, and diverted by, junk, that in the end, Doesn't contribute one pin eared, foundered mule, to my LIVING?!...

(Living = Joy, Love, Friendship, Laughter, Fulfillment, Shining Times!)

It Should Be about, finding ways to add the greatest amount of joy to our lives... to go as far as we can go, toward Shining Times... by squeezing the greatest amount possible, from our toys and tools!

Not... doin' without the toys and tools!

Sure, if the Toy don't contribute... dump it! ... But, if it does... get two!

Don't measure a "Thing" by it's price... unless that price is what it costs your Life! Measure it by; "Does it put a smile on your face... and in your heart?

If it does that... does the dollar cost even matter?... assuming you have the dollars for it, of course!  ... there's that "Balance" thing again. :o)

Bottom line? Collect those toys and tools, as many of 'em as you can carry... that honestly "Earn", a place in your tool shed, or your toy box. If the "cost" of the toys and tools... is a greater burden than what your mule can carry... discard 'em..

Protect your Mule... Him... You Need! :o)

... and don't fret too much about the 'Missed Calls'... they'll make for good campfire stories... sippin' a beer with all those friends, that your laughter will collect.

RV Boondocking to Colorado this Year?

...Are you gonna be wandering past Denver?... or just 'bout any other big Town?... most of 'em have Zoos! ... and a fine day you'll have... just strollin' easy in the sunshine, through all the critters... at the Denver Zoo.

Heidi and I met up with the Daughter lady and her lil' one... our Granddaughter Jillian... for the lil' one's first trip to the Denver Zoo...

Jillian especially like the Orangutans...

... and was payin' attention... but didn't seem quite sure... 'bout the Hippo!

It turned out one of the best days... in some little while... and not 'cause it was crazy happy or any such thing... It was just one of those nice... slow... quiet (in spite of the crowd at the zoo!) days where you're just happy to be... alive where you are...

And now... a few snapshots from the Denver Zoo...

How's that for a view... nigh on to the end of a remembered day? :o)

...and that pic 5 up from the bottom... Jillian settin' in her stroller at a monkey exhibit... can't you just see her thinkin' by the look on her face? ... "Pappy! You PROMISED! My stroller WOULDN'T get stuck in this jungle muck! You PROMISED!" :o)

Folks... ever'where you are... there's places as fine as the Denver Zoo, to build a remembered day for you an' yours... Hunt 'em up... Enjoy 'em...

Find those extra special Museums... galleries... soul filling Natural places... or those quiet areas to camp and heal...

Then, Please, come back here and help us out!... Tell all us other folks about the great places you found! ... Your RV Destinations

Well... I better get to finding some more good places...

Building the RV "Community"

Those that build websites will tell you it's a mistake to send folks someplace else... as in; to other websites. To some degree, that might be true... I look at it from a lil' different place though.

It's my calculation that if I can strengthen the world around me... I'm in a better place... right? How's that for some "Liberal Thinking" ... from a dang near anarchist, leave-me-the-hell-alone Cowboy Biker? :o) To me... it's a 'putting my money where my mouth is', do the right thing, enlightened self interest, Deal.

Maybe... pointin' out the folks I run across, with some hard won wisdom to share, will be remembered down the road... and you'll come back to look around here some more... once in a while.

The worlds that hold most of my attention these days, and that I have the greatest desire to strengthen, are the worlds of RV Travelers and Motorcycle Touring.

Every once in a while I run across somebody else that I think... is "Doin' it Right"... and I got lucky just the other day... I followed one of those "Follower" links over there on the side... and found a blog written by a young Canadian Gal by the name of Rae Crothers.

One of my ambitions with my writing here, has been to get younger folks to see that there just might be a Better Way... and I think, this Gal... is a long way down the road of finding that Better way for her.

Just about anybody can learn from this Gal... and especially all you Single Gals Yondering on the RV Road!

How many Gals out there, wish they could 'take off' and go to yondering?... but don't... 'cause ever'body 'round 'em... Dumps on their Dreams? Ever'body tells 'em; "You can't go by yourself. It's not safe!" or worse; "You're just a girl... You can't do it alone!"

What a bunch of Hooey! How I wish I could grab a good solid hold on those "ever'bodys"... and shake some sense into 'em! How are you any less safe... drivin' down the road... in your rig... than you are... drivin' down the road... in your car... at 'Home'? ... Man or Woman?

This ain't 'bout safety for those spoutin' naysayers either... it's about Their inability to summon the courage to follow Their hearts... So to hide that... they've got to stop those that do. Don't listen to 'em!

...Just 'cause you blockers and wasters ain't got Dreams and ambitions of your own, or the guts to chase 'em... that's YOUR difficulty! Don't go trashin' what somebody else aches for... just 'cause YOU ain't got the spleen to see it through! and all you single Gals... don't listen to those naysayin' busybodies!

YOU can do it! What you want DOES make sense... and YOU Aren't the first to think so!

Froggi ain't been alone out there!... Uh... or I guess I should say wasn't... since she ain't 'single' any more! :o)

So... Check out Rae's blog... She's got her head screwed on straight anyhoo! and the guts to make it happen! She's a Gal, along with Froggi...  to show you other Gals, a fine way to roll!... and you can get it all from the perspective of a Lady... not just some goofy Ol' crusty, pussgut, biker cowboy! :o)

She'll show you, for once and for all... that them folks, that are blockin' your road were wrong... are wrong... and will always BE wrong... and standin' behind as you drive away... wishin' down deep... (even if they'll never admit it)... that They Had Your Guts!

That "New" Cummins needs a bit of work... and Other RV Ramblings...

With getting ready to do some long, wide circles, starting this spring/summer... We've set up our fixed/Mailing address as our store so we can get any paper mail forwarded easily from there... and there's only one problem with that...

Heidi's Bead Store  is in a different county than we've lived in for the past 7+ years. What comes into play there is emissions. Since our address is gonna be in Larimer county... the vehicles are gonna have to be licensed over there too... and Larimer has those emissions to do... least-ways, the last I heard... maybe I should check up on that? :o)

Now... overheating is Not a problem with this, new to us, '99 cummins... just 'tother way 'round. That sucker runs kinda cool! My bet is the thermostat is pretty much stuck open... which ain't doin' it any good, and would likely give a poor if not bad emissions reading... So today I'm plannin' on trackin' down a fresh thermostat and gettin' the truck ready to try and get an inspection sometime either tomorrow... or first of the week...

I've also, got to get some other chores done on the truck makin' it ready for our Yondering... my only issue with doin' that is my increasingly 'squeeky' ways... I seem to be draggin' my feet on such things, 'till I'm tee total sure that I have to do it...

Hmmm... sure hope I don't go and get all OCD on such doin's! :o)

Most of 'em are the same sorts of jobs I did on the previous pair of Cummins Trucks. Tool/Storage boxes... Hitch work, auxilliary fuel tank, and on this rig... I'm really wanting to put in something in the vicinity of a 50 gal fresh water tank... and a 50 gallon NOT fresh water tank. :o)

We're really planning to spend a lot of our time, brushed up in the not so close to town back country... at least as 'Back Country' as I can drag a 30 foot fiver with two fine motorcycles attached!

What I don't want is to have to hitch up and pull the rig down to any sort of a dump station. Now that I've finally got off the dime and added the macerator pump... I'd have the ability to pump the black water up into an onboard transport tank... to haul to a dump station... then load fresh water to recharge our tank back at the rig... 'thout ever having to turn a tire on the fifth wheel...

... that'll allow, easily, two week camps... and longer... :o) ... if I can't tell time very well :o)

Our budget got a kick in the pants the last couple of weeks... a good thing!  The hours they're usin' me at the hardware store got pumped back up to what I'd been doin'. I'd already carved out what I'd thought would be a workable budget on the dinero flowing from the reduced hours... so... getting that replaced should let us do some of the 'financial house', rebuilding work, a lil' bit quicker... Suh-Wheet!

Put that alongside our eliminating that danged Ol' Mortgage... and it's like we done got ourselves a great big pay raise!...then  put the icing of a... don't-owe-a-dime-on-it truck and that Gorgeous Red Raider Motorcycle (also Free and Clear) into the mix, and 2010 just keeps shining brighter all the dang time!

Oh yeah people! I'll say it again... Hang tough... Take it slow and careful... do the right things (for you)... and you are gonna get where you've been reachin' for... For Sure and For Certain! Just keep the faith... If we can get through the tough times... to the sunny slopes on the other side... So Can You! I Vow!

What-a-ya Think? Does Living Frugal... Ever get any Easier?

Uh Huh! I think it Do!

I think... I may finally be actually shaking the "Chasing Stuff" virus we all get afflicted with...

Outside of replacing the truck... sort of a necessity... (which I did pretty much on the cheap)... and upgrading our Motorcycles (for a better two-up ride)... I'm having significant difficulty getting into 'spending' anything...

The first thought that crosses my mind is... "Where am I gonna put it?"... and the second is... "What's wrong with the one I've got?"... followed by... "I've done without for how many years?... Why do I really Need this?"

Even when we changed out our phones here a couple weeks ago... we worked things out so... down the road, the monthly dent in the budget will be about the same... maybe even a couple bucks smaller... with a whole lot more service to show for it...

Hmmm... wonder if I'm finally learning to 'walk the talk' of frugal livin' and a minimalism ideal... without it having to be a conscious, deliberate effort to resist the "Buy, Buy, Buy" droning we hear all the time?

Wouldn't that be a fine thing? To be able to just roll along... without having to be on guard all the time to protect yourself from some "used car salesman"? ... To have it be kind of like Breathing?... It just happens...

I do believe that's how it's workin' out for us... after a time of deliberate... planned out... cowboy frugality... ya start to form a habit that makes 'toein' the line' easier to do... each day. All that junk about 'collecting stuff' you hear... starts to fade out into just background noise you don't even notice any more...

When you Need a thing... you go out an' get it... but otherwise... you just don't... and you don't have that kind of a nervous, itchy feeling that you should somehow be Getting more. That you should somehow have more "stuff" to show for your labors...

... and that's 'bout when... You notice that You Are Getting More!

More appreciation of the sunrise... more appreciation of the feel of the sun... rollin' down the asphalt on a fine, red Motorcycle! :o) ... more appreciation of the quiet in the middle of a star filled night... more appreciation of being able to just walk down a mountain trail... 'thout worryin' bout all that "stuff"... you didn't get!... just bein' able to breathe in the clear air of High Mountain Freedom!

Hoo! Ya!

Slowly Falling Back into Old Routines...

Laying awake at oh-dark-thirty listening to the rain on the roof... figured I might as well get up and diddle around... So I cranked up the coffee grinder, preparing some of those dark Ol' coffee beans we got at Trader Joe's in Tucson back in February... and sat down at my desk to warm up this eelectronical confabulation that I spend so much time torturing!

Found an article on proper RV Braking Technique and posted a link to it on the News and Reviews page... if you're new... just learning... or an Old Timer that might could use a 'refresher'... you might want to give it a read...

Rain on the roof of our fifth wheel... is it as pleasurable a thing to you as it is to me?... I don't know that it puts me to sleep, but it sure has me breathing easy in a short time... well... as long as it don't go on for days! :o)

Don't know why it's such a contentment... but the fact that it has some sort of a Natural Poetry to me is a simple fact... one of those simple pleasures that competes with my Ipod! :o)

It would be even better this morning... were we up in one of my favorite high mountain camps... but I'll take it today, where we are... I can't think of a whole lot better start to a day than sitting at my desk butchering the language, the morning sky still dark, waitin' on sunrise, sippin' a cup of hot, Trader Joe's coffee, enya croonin' soft on the stereo...

... a quiet, easy start to what'll be a long day... pretty fine.

... and considerin' the rain, the couple miles of dirt road to get to the pavement... and my lazy ways these days... I'll run the Boss Hoss truck this mornin'... and leave that Red Headed Devil Woman, Yamaha Raider, tucked under her cover for the day! :o)

Have a good one folks...

RVer Gadgets and Too Many Choices!

Gadgets gadgets gadgets! ... Can't complain 'bout the kids... and their Ipods and video games any more can I?! :o)

Now... Apple has announced that they're gonna make their iphone available to Verizon customers... Boy... is Heidi torqued! :o) She wanted an iphone!... but we just got our new Motorola DROID phones... which we got 'cause the iphone was only available on at&t... and Verizons' data card system is the best available, in my opinion...

... and since... my websites are a purty lil' piece of my income now-a-days... and my only access to the net is through my MiFi 2200 air/data/WiFi card... we didn't want to change that out...

She wanted to swap out phones 'cause she was so disgusted with her Blackberry Storm... Kept trying to pawn it off on me... uh... I might not be real bright... but... I was... THERE!... most ever' time she had her difficulties with the dang thing... which was near every day... If you're lookin' at smart phones... be smart... and avoid a Blackberry Storm... I've talked to too many folks that have to pull the battery 2-3 times a week 'cause it 'locked up'... that struggle with an insensitive touch screen... and on and on... Blackberry Storm has got issues! :o)

First time she picked up and used a Motorola Droid... she grinned and commented... "This touch screen works just like Betty's iphone!"

Been using the Droids for something like two weeks now... I'm slow... but starting to get the hang of a smart phone... Heidi just runs off with it... nigh on to a kid with it herself... Me? I just want it for a phone... plus its' ability to do email... and a couple other lil' things... like uh... playing chess! :o)

The thing is... from what I'm told... if you want a bunch of apps on an iphone... you gotta pay for most of 'em...

Google on the other hand (google and verizon are partnered up on the Droid)... believes in adding value to their product... not milking the turnip.. at least as bad! :o) ... We've got way too many apps on these two phones now (mostly Heidi!) and we've not had to pay a dime for any of 'em...

Now... I'm not an electronic whiz... not even close. That said... I'm now makin' something approaching 50% of my contribution to our refrigerators contents... on a laptop!... so... from that perspective... and from watching a couple folks diddlin' around on their iphones... and seeing how my lil' Motorola Droid functions... I'd have to say it's a horserace... They're good phones...

If you have 'issues' with Apple... and want an alternative... check out the Droids! :o) ... just be careful at the mall... so ya'll don't look like some goofy kid... jammin' to the tunes... on your cell phone... Ipod... video game... :o)

It's much better to look like a goofy, Ol', stove up, puss gut, bald headed, geezer... gettin' down! :o)

... and my bet is... the Droid will leave some nickles in your pocket... so you can afford to eat out at the Cracker Barrel... one more breakfast each month! :o)

RV Rigs along with Boots and Saddles!

Played around the other day... checking clearances and distances...

Putting this rig together is gonna be like trying to squeeze that one, last... fat... sardine into the can :o) There's 'bout 25 inches of space, twixt the corner of the 5er... and the headache rack... with the rig about 97% jackknifed...

I have the gooseneck adapter positioned, about where I'm gonna move the hitch to... for this picture. You can see it's a mite behind the axle instead of in front of it... and contrary to what some chicken littles are gonna squall at you... it's perfectly safe, and functional... as proven by John Davidson a long time ago!

...Hmmm that truck was 5 years before this one! :o)

I'll still be within capacities... I'll add Firestone suspension to level things back out... the bike will be there in front of it putting more weight back forward... and the truck can handle this load to begin with... and then... Goosenecks are heavier rated and  have more articulation than a fifth wheel hitch... and they Don't put more torque on the pin box...

How could they? The "lever" remains the same length...(the distance between the kingpin and the truck attachment) and the increased articulation in a gooseneck means it won't lock up until long after a fifth wheel has bound tight and busted things...

I've hauled gooses too many thousands of miles to spend any time listening to the hogwash piled higher and deeper, argufyin' 'bout the merits... or demerits, of gooseneck vs. fifthwheel hitches... and I've hauled this rig... something in the vicinity of 50,000 miles... with the gooseneck... and something like 1/5th of that... with that 550 lb Yamaha V Star... doin' rear guard... sitting in her Motorcycle Carrier on the Tail end...

The big Yamaha Raider that's gonna sit there, on the truck, is somewhere 'round 24 inches right through there... It's gonna be snug... and a guy will have to pay attention to what he's doin' (when he's turning tight)... but I don't see any deal breakers here...

When I think on it... I don't know that I've had to jack the rig this tight more than three or four times in the last ten years to get into somewhere... and if I do?... I'll likely have already unloaded the Raider anyway.

So... it's close to time to start cuttin' metal to rework a few things on the bed... I want to add some water tanks in place of the bent up existing storage boxes... a fuel tank... move that hitch point... bolt on Firestone airbags... and a couple of new underbed storage boxes...

While I'm doin' my shcemin'... Heidi has been gettin' horseback a bit with James and Krea (our 'landlords')

... at least when the wind ain't been crankin' Colorado 90!

She's had a problem though... amongst all the packin', storin' and divestin' we've done... her boots disappeared...

So... in her search to solve her need for proper footwear while horseback... she managed to kill two of those 'problem birds' with one throw... and caught herself some Flaming Biker Mama boots that'll do two jobs!

She'll have flash and fancy while straddlin' a Horseback Saddle... and ... her soon to be built, custom Motorcycle Saddle!

She was gigglin' pretty good when she brought 'em home last night!... "I can't believe I bought these!"

But... I'm proud of my Daughter... Keriann tol' her mom; "You're a Gramma now... You can do anything you want! Who cares what other people think!"  How awesome is that?! :o)

Time for me to get back to it...

Sharlotte Nudged My Thinking Parts Again...

She made a comment yesterday, askin' 'bout Heidi's Motorcycle... and that gets a whole passel of things involved.

I've talked, a lot, about NOT chasing dollars... but chasing life instead. That's an easy thing to say... and a difficult bronc to ride!

Sharlotte's question got me pondering on that again... and I believe I've realized, I may have been slippin' up there a mite.

In all our planning, I've been trying to get everything including the kitchen sink, wedged into some part of the rig, and you know what? It ain't all gonna fit! :o) so... what Heidi and I had decided was that we'd just load one bike... that big new Yamaha Raider... and leave the V Star parked for use whenever we went to winter camp.

The stuff that I've been figuring to put, in the Slick's place, back in a purpose built cargo box on the tail of the fiver, was my tools and materials for what I'd planned to be a 'Mobile' Journal Studio...

OK... right up to the point that Sharlotte rattled my cage... and the thought occurred to me... OK... OK... Thoughts do happen for me once in a while!

The thought that I asked myself is this... "There's only 29 hours in a day... and you're already usin' 25 of 'em... with 4 or 5 or so for sleepin'... when is it, ya bowlegged pussgut... that you're gonna do all this Journal Buildin'?"

The thing is, that Journal work was thought of to be a supplemental "Camp Income"... but between Heidi's store... and the way my "Writing" is comin' along... I'm thinkin' that yet another 'activity' at this point is spreading myself too thin... too many irons in too many fires... and if I keep it up... that big noise you'll hear'll be my butt... crashing an' burning! :o)

That and it turns me back into that same Ol' rut... chasing dollars... for dollars sake... Instead of... LIVIN'! and falling back, into the Old, Failed ways is a path this ol' buster is unwilling to follow.

So... forget that nonsense! Slick... The V Star, will be occupyin' her place of Honor as Rear Guard on the Eagle... That Red Raider will climb up on the truck... and outside of a few tools in a small box or two, to keep my leather carvin' rust knocked off... those other things will have to wait, where ever we finally decide to set up a base camp.

I'll concentrate my efforts on word butcherin' and yarning. It hasn't been a skyrocket... but, for the last three years that work has come along, growing steadily and looks to be threatening to be a full time enterprise for me...

At least at the level I require... and if I dedicate to it, the work it deserves.

There's something in this, I think, for ever'body to ponder a bit on... Don't let life get lost in the turmoil of Livin'! Don't let the pressures to make a 'living'... consume the pleasures of that Life. Somewhere... we need to draw a line and say; "Today... I live!... and Bossman?... Ya'll can just Wait!"

and Sharlotte?... Thanks for the 'nudge'! :o)

Materials lists, Days off, and Writers Block...

Been tallyin' up the material needs for the various projects I've got on the drawing board... that I'm wanting to get done in the next, say 60 days or so... so that... when I've built things to the point my confidence is strong enough... we'll be ready to just Load 'N Go!

Today, as all Thursdays is day one of my days off from the grindstone "day job"... and we're takin' it off. The last several, we've actually worked at other things... and are in danger of that danged 'back sliding' ... so I am by God gonna do nothing significant today! :o) Today is only for relaxin'.

Though, I should do some serious work on some writing projects that have been dormant for a bit... problem is, I've got a touch of writers block. Though, truth be known, I believe that's a bad name for it... 'cause I don't think that it truly exists. In fact, I think writers block is only the excuse folks use, (me included) when they simply don't have the ambition to do the work! :o) ... "Oh, I just can't think of anything to write!"...

Baloney!... You sit your butt down, and just start punchin' buttons... and pretty soon... ya got whole page of words! But... ya gotta be possessed of the ambition to punch those buttons... and today... I'm just feelin' fearful lazy! :o)

My ego is still feelin' pretty sassy though... Checked my stats this morning... and though January was only the second month to bust 10,000 visitors, and February only missed that by a hundred... March was a genuine bell ringer!

12,120 folks came through the door into my "Cowboy Biker, RV Boondocker, Word Butchers' Reading Room!" That is Suh-Wheet! Hoo! Ya!

Things like that tend to stimulate my ambitions just a mite. Let's just hope my Alligator Ambitions don't run my broke down butt off a cliff! :o)

I do have quite a lil' simmerin' along in the works... Recent changes with Amazon means I really should just drop out that "General Store"... Not that I'm too awful mercenary... but... I don't get paid anymore for anything sold through it... Don't see why they should get free advertising...

...and the bookstore is the same deal... Though... I'm planning on reworking that, through a new outfit. I'll be setting it up as an Ebook Store for my own scribblings... with several different formats from PDF to Kindle available... and Likely... I'll make things available through Amazon...

Now, if I can just get that Old Time, western 'Shoot 'em up'  I wrote, properly edited and ready...I'll soon be dunkin' donuts, an' sippin' tea, with all them other Literary Giants! :o)

Ain't that a purty picture... A sweat stained, black felt hat... over muddy, cow flop encrusted boots... sittin' to tea with J.K. Rowling... :o)

Take Good Care
