Been Busy... So Many Odds and Ends...

The Target Date to pull out is gonna pass on by... I think. Wanted to leave on the 6th... it's pretty sure now that the date is gonna be at least a week later... aw well... grit your teeth, bow your head... and Ride off into the Wind!

Been working on six dozen different things... I wonder if some Doc would claim some sort of attention deficit disorder? :o)

Ya'll probably have seen a few changes around here... re-worked my lil' bookstore... and a couple other things.
Turns out... there's quite a lil' "Housekeeping" I need to do around the sites.

Trying hard to avoid having to sell Soda Pop at some National Park Greasy Spoon to fill in the gaps. :o) ... Now, can't you just see that? Bald headed, tatted, Cowboy Biker waiter, sloppin' coffee and burgers all over some lil' ol' lady from New Jersey?... "Whad-a-ya mean you ordered Sprite?... Quit your whining and eat your Freakin' Yogurt fool!... and you better Like It!"

Yes sir! ... Prime, Quality, Customer Service! :o)

Getting a little culling, and more shuffling of closets done in the rig as well... trying to finish up the disrupted remodel... Selling the house was a good thing (Even with the $$$ loss)... but like I expected; Doing a remodel of a house you're living in is tough enough. Remodeling an RV you're living in is Running against the Wind... blindfolded... in a small room!

And... at the same time... We're working to get the Motorcycle Carry worked out. A couple of guys have sent me ideas through the site... and to tell the truth... while their specific ideas won't fit... exactly... they gave me the inspiration to weld up what I think will... So, Many Thanks!

... and still have more revision to get done on my Western Novel!... so I can publish that...

Sheesh! 700 mile days on the worst of the Alcan... are lookin' pretty  good right now! :o)

But... I can see that Western Horizon just off there a mite... calling to me... so I'll keep on pushin'.

Just Me... Bein' Me!

Just a little more Cowboy Engineering...

Heidi and I took a ride Friday, up over Trail Ridge in Rocky Mtn. National Park... First Time She has been up there on a bike... 'course, this time, she was sittin' in back on the Raider...

So... not the best time to find this lil' scene... sittin' up in front of those sheriff's cars on the right side is a crotch rocket... that needs some paint work now... uh ... and a new tire. Not sure what he did... but it ruined his day for sure... :o)

I was a lil' surprised it didn't freak her out any... guess she's gained some confidence in my ability to keep us from bein' hood ornaments on somebody's Buick! :o)

She was a lot happier though... with a view like this from the back seat...

She's still learning how to work the camera on the fly...

But... once we learn that lil' skill... I think we'll get some fun pics!... I remember her callin' out something... a couple of times... sounded like; "Don't Turn Right!" :o)

One thing 'bout this ride... we've been talkin' 'bout Slick for a while. Heidi really has come to enjoy riding behind me... and, the Ride My Own has not been advancing very quickly for her... or ... not at all, and we'd almost decided to sell the V Star... and just ride the Big Red Raider...

Buuuuuut now... after she saw as many gals as she did, ridin' their own and lookin' Fine!... on this ride... We've pretty much chosen, for now, to keep the Lil' V Star 'round for a while... give her some more time to get comfortable...

Which means some more Cowboy Engineering. As always... if I could just throw money at it, there'd be no problem... buuuut... considering the lack of such ability... There won't be any Changing Rigs in the close up future... So... I'll have to just conjure up a way to load two... as in dos, zwei, a pair... more than ONE! Large Motorcycles... on a fifth wheel! :o)

Slick already has her perch, sittin' back there as Tail gunner... Red... bein' the larger of the two wheeled ladies... is gonna have to climb up on the truck itself...and that is where all the options come in...

The bed is too tall... and the bike is too low to just set a ramp and roll her up... She high centers on the side of the bed... soooooo.... I either have to Dove Tail the side of the bed... or create some sort of an extended ramp setup... that shallows out the loading angle to get her flashy red self over that break point. or... some combination of the two.

...and that is what I'll be doin' for the next week or so with our Welder landlord, so we can get gone, sometime in the first part of September!

Hopefully there won't be too many... "Uh... OOPS... hadn't figured on that!" escapades. :o)

But... I guess none of it'll get done if I sit here and just continue gabbin'... so...

Later!

Makin' Ready, one more time!
Brian

If I Ever Have Anything, RVing or just General Life... Work Out the Way It Was Planned...

I think I'll be in danger of some sort of a seizure! ... but that Murphy fella bein' who he is... I'm not real fearful of suffering any seizures in the near future...

Started setting up an appointment with my Welder Pro yesterday morning... to do some frame work on the Eagle... to allow me to carry the Raider in the Motorcycle Carrier I built back there, a couple years ago, for the V Star...

No worries... Right?... Uh... WRONG! :o)

Sheesh... That Ol' Lovely, Red Headed, Yamaha Two Wheeler, that carried me to Alaska in such style... is a bigger Gal than I thought!... Her front end :o) ... is 'bout a 1/2" too wide to squeeze into the Wheel Dock tire chock... and her back end :o) ... is 'bout an inch too wide to fit into the tire track!...

That never even crossed my feeble mind... bummer!

So... to make it all work is gonna take more $$$ than exists in the budget just now... especially after the cooling system work I had to do on the truck the other day.

Which leaves me in a bit of a sad place... We're leaving... again... in the next week or so... still don't really know which direction... how-some-ever, we are Going! ... the sad place comes in to the picture, 'cause... it looks like I'm gonna have to leave Red parked in my Daughters... or is that my Son-in-Laws? garage for a lil' bit... 'till I can work out her accommodations on the rig.

Maybe... We should do like the Box Canyon Bloggers! did and run two drivers? Rather than tryin' to teach Heidi to Ride a Motorcycle maybe I should teach her to stir the gearbox of that Dodge... with the fiver on behind when we move... while I ride "Outrider" on the Bike! :o) ... hmmm... it was Bobbie ridin' "Outrider" for them... wasn't it? :o)

...or Maybe I just need to start investing in lottery scratch tickets? :o)

Aw well... as in all things... when you're not sure what to do 'bout something... best to just go on down the road... and let things simmer... until the answer comes to you...

Looking Toward the Horizon..
Brian

Repairs, Routines and Prison Breaks...

The cooling system repairs to the truck... would likely have been unnecessary... had the previous owner done proper, routine maintenance... such as simply flush the dang radiator once in a while...

Kind of a hard thing to spot though. You can't see much but green coolant when you pull the cap and look in... can't see the internal piping all junked up...

... and why didn't the overheating happen till the run to Ouray?... 'cause the fuel pump was broke! :o) ... which pumped less fuel... which = less engine performance and less heat... So... you fix the pump, the engine starts running Right... and then... the Radiator finds out it can't keep up!

So... I guess the solution to overheating diesels is... Don't fix your fuel pumps! :o)

Then, just to keep things fun... coming back from Ouray, I also had had to put in some steering fluid... though no leaks were found... then... when I dropped the rig off to get the cooling system work done... THERE was the leak!

Oh thanks! I wondered where you were... I had an extra few hundred bucks layin' 'round I just really wanted to invest in a new Hydrobooster! :o)

We have to hang close 'round here till something like the 5th of September... Something 'bout my Granddaughters first birthday... then we're pulling out... and at this point, we've no solid idea of which way we're pulling.

Which is the way I prefer to wander... Just put my Nose into the Wind, and stay behind it!

North or West seem the likeliest. Still pretty warm to the south... We'll not be going very far... or very fast... I am determined to shake the "Movin' on Syndrome" that pushes a gypsy to go too far... too fast.

It's like there are demons chasing me sometimes that must be outrun. Been kinda difficult this past week. After straddling that motorcycle for a month... every day splitting the wind... every day a new road, new visions, new people... Every day the Freedom to live without someone claiming rights to the blood in my veins... It becomes a Way of Going that is a pure and proper joy, to a Natural Born, Gypsy Cowboy Biker.

... A Joy for which there are no words that can be strung together which will allow a person who does not Get It... to understand the inner workings of a Gypsy.

I got "Into" that routine. I was LIVING in it. I was Comfortable in it. I Treasured it.

Now... back here, though I've plenty that I should be doing... my eyes are on the Horizon... my Heart is in the Wind... What I see of Value... is Out There calling to me from the Open Road... and this life, here in obedient, civilized, servitude, that so many try to tell me is what I should trust my future to and invest the remains of my life in...

...is seen by me to resemble a Prison Sentence...

All my thoughts revolve around working out the means of our permanent escape... and seeing how many others can be "Saved" along with us. :o)

Out There... lies Far Country, as yet unseen trails... and the dust of Shining Times, that feeds the hunger in the soul of a Man, Born to Wander.

Gritting My Teeth, Bowing My Head... and Riding Into the Wind!

Work on the Truck and Work on My Bookstore!

So... my wish that the dent in our wallet, made by our RV Tow vehicle/truck repairs wouldn't be too big, was pretty much ignored... BOING! so now the "Good Deal" I made for that Ol' Diesel... is down to just being a "fair" deal. :o) I have confidence I can still attain a; "What the hell were you thinkin' Cowboy?" status on the purchase of that rig. :o)

Oh well... Pay big bucks to buy a new one... or pay the same thing... over a longer time... to keep an Old one running... right? :o)

On a more cheerful note... for this Ol' word butcher anyhoo... I've got a lot done on rebuilding my RV Bookstore. Got the tuneup done that Smashwords ( the folks doing the ebook magic for me) asked me to do on the formatting of my lil' ebooks... at least they've not told me I did that wrong again... yet!

I'm hopeful I'll get the work done to add my first "Western Novel" to the Bookstore by the end of September... I'm looking forward... with a good bit of apprehension to that day! :o)

Getting caught up on some of my chores... trying to decide if the Big Red Bike will go with us on this first circle we'll be leaving on shortly... or if she's going to have to wait a mite somewhere, for additional motorcycle carrier/frame modifications to the rig...

Today looks like the Alaskan rains figured out where I went, and are working to catch up... but Ha!... I'm dry and inside! let those storms thunder and roll! Ya Can't touch me now! I've got plenty of work to do right here at the keyboard... and plenty of coffee to keep me wired up to do it... so rain away! :o)

Preparing for another Circle out into the Great and Glorious West

RV Boondocking Housekeeping... and Finding the Power of Freedom...

A goodly bunch of Mental Rambling here today folks! :o)

Seems like a lot of folks are thinkin' along the same trails the last week or so... Box Canyon Blogger, Ara over at "Oasis"... Froggi Donna and the list goes on... all seem to be sippin' their coffee while doin' a lil' re-evalutation...

So... it seems kinda natural, that as I was rollin' my Big Red Bike on that wide circle through Alaska and the Yukon, and then comin' back to the Eagle in Colorado... that I'd find my own self walkin' through another period of similar 'reworking'.

I think maybe... even if you've got a good grip on where you should be headed... ever'body needs to stop and take a close look every now and again... to just make sure the trail they're traveling... is still the right one for them...

... and Do Not Be Afraid to make adjustments... Minor or Major... the only shame would be to talk yourself into goin' the wrong way... 'cause you Already started out that way, and it's too late to turn back...

It ain't Ever too late... unless you're dead!

My hope... for me... is that I never quite get to where I'm headed... the trip has always been the treasure to me... getting to my destination has always meant... the trip is over! Bummer! :o)

One thing that really got driven home, one more time, on my 8678 mile Motorcycle Ride to Alaska was that Less is More! for sure and for certain... fact is, that as little as I had with me, packed on my Motorcycle... I was wishin' I had even less! :o)

Living out of a pair of saddle bags and a dry bag...with my ruck for a lil' extra, proved after a Wet month to fit my personality pretty well... I guess I forgot how light I traveled back when I was rodeoin'...

Had I to do it over again... I'd figure out how to cut down and combine the ruck and the dry bag into one bag... sitting on the tail rack... Cowboy Light!

Now here I am... in my third day home... and that experience and thinkin' has me doin' some more re-arranging in the Eagle... in preparation for our impending departure on the first of our many RV Boondocking circles of the next few years...

Distilling even further our 'distilled' possessions... arranging for ever more efficient use of our limited space... and really, really looking at 'stuff'... while asking a few Questions; 1. When was the last time I even used this? #2. Do I Really even need this? and 3rd. Would it be Easier to just scrap This piece... and buy a new one, down the Road... IF... we ever even need one?

I sometimes wonder if I'll ever be satisfied with where I've culled down to... maybe the proper answer is, No? ... maybe... the proper answer is; I'll keep an open mind on this subject... and if somebody can show me a more efficient, Better, way to do the job of living... carrying even less Stuff along to do it... I'll cull again! :o)

Meanwhile, I dropped the Truck off at the Diesel shop yesterday afternoon... for the work of correcting the overheating issue... and maybe a couple of other warts... so we're hoping the mechanical surgery don't dent our meager wallet too hard... but... a reliable truck is kind of a necessity for our way of living... ain't it?

Along with the normal rig and stuff preps for another Leaving... I've got plenty of work to do in the RV Boondocking Income corral! Ever'body knows that a whole lot of folks have really takin' a whuppin' the past few years... this Ol' Buster included... But I'll not complain... too much...

It sure seems to be working out, that maybe the last couple years were simply an education I needed... and has trotted out a couple of opportunities that had not even amounted to a wisp of smoke from a fevered brain... three years ago!

My lil books, that I converted to ebooks a lil' over a month ago, seem to be moving along... even without much Hawking on my part... so far! :o) No barn burners... but... they are getting out there a bit...

Over the next couple of weeks I've got to do some touching up of the formatting of those lil' books... got notified by my e-book publisher they had some warts! :o)

The big job is to completely rebuild my Bookstore so that it does its' job as The Place for folks to find my e-books... and hopefully succeed at the job of producing a greater part of our RV Boondocking income... or to put it another way... My version of "Workamping"... where I'm sittin' in Camp... sippin' a cup of really fine Cowboy Coffee... and the "Working" comes in where I'm also, sittin' in front of my Laptop... tap tap tappin' out another Wild Cowboy Yarn on the keyboard! :o)

There's other irons in the fire... some that may pan out... some that may never see the light of day... but the point is.. the only thing holding me back at this point... is me... and the same holds true for most ever'body else.

Anything worth doing is something that makes you juuuuuuust a mite quivery inside. If it doesn't... look again... maybe you need to reach a lil' farther... If you stay comfortable... it usually means you're not moving... Learning new things... finding New Opportunities... Living through a NEW Experience...

... has one especially critical demand... You have to Choose to take the Risk!

Standing on the side of a Mountain in Alaska... or layin' in my tent at night... out in the middle of nowhere in the Yukon... I wasn't quaking with fear...  but there was this lil' poke of discomfort... way down deep... I was, alone... things around me were new and unfamiliar... and let's face it... all 150, Billy Bad Ass, lbs of me... was No Longer at the top of the food chain! :o)

There were things I was a mite concerned about... money, the sufficiency of my equipment... plain dumb luck... of which... my luck is generally pretty damn dumb! The weather... and whether I'd get converted to Bear crap before the next Yukon sunrise..

...There's a million things to worry about....

... That lil' Poke of "Discomfort"? That's that uneasy feeling you get when you're "Pushing the Envelope" a bit...

Here's the real deal... at some point... like I quoted Ol' Gus before... you have to just put all those worries aside... and say; "Let's just go on and go if we're goin'!"... or... resign yourself to existing in that safe, predictable... socially acceptable... comfort...

If that's how it's to be for me... well.. shoot me in the head and call it an accident! I cannot concern myself with all the things that might could blow up on me... Just bow my head, grit my teeth... and ride into the wind!

What's great about all this is this... All that queasy, scary discomfort... is followed shortly by the Glorious Exhilaration you feel... when you Realize... that it's also what you have to pass through...

... to get to the FREEDOM you find yourself Living in when you come out the other side!

When You reach out and take a good solid grip on your fears, your worries, and all the "worker drone" B.S. the system beats you down with, from the time you got to quit using diapers... and shake the stuffing out of all that crap!... You suddenly feel a Power... A Power they never wanted to let you find out about!... and a Power you'll never want to ever let go of again! HooYa!

The Ride is Done... and Now There's RV Boondocking Fish to Fry!

Got home last night... This morning my head is spinning a bit with all the chores I've got to get done in a rushin' hurry.

Heidi's been busy movin' the store location, a couple of doors down, while I was gone... and gettin' things ready with it for us to pull out in a couple weeks...

I've got work to do on the truck... overheating causes to find and fix, odds and ends to tie up... Book publishing labors to get done... so we can sustain our wandering... and a whole, heavy pack of other jobs...

... along with an article or two I need to write about observations this Ol' buster made, rolling his Motorcycle along the Alaskan Highway for the last 25 days.

Things didn't work out, on this run, quite the way I'd planned... but they worked out fine, just the same. Pretty much how life goes most of the time, ain't it?

There were unexpected friendships found, and unavoidable bad weather to adjust plans to... all in all, a wondrous, fine month on the Open Road.

... and now...it's back to Work for me!... for a bit! :o)

Thinkin' an' Dreamin' Along the Clearwater River in Idaho

I camped last night in a BLM campground, east of Lewiston, Idaho, on the bank of the Clearwater River. A nice camp... and for me (Golden Access) just five bucks! You just can't beat that. I'll be riding toward Lolo pass today...

A gorgeous, sunny morning... the sound of the river just below me, a cup of hot coffee... Bob Seeger singin' to me on my Ipod... Shining Times folks! ... It'll be hard to leave the absolute joy of these past few days... to go back to the Real World... even if my Real is still pretty fine.

...But, the pure Freedom I've had these past few weeks... is a Soul Feeding Joy. Whether you gain it on the Alaskan Highway... or wanderin' the Sonoran Desert in Arizona... Everyone should hunt up the opportunity to know what it feels like to be FREE!

You do that... you find it that One Time... and the rest of your life will be spent workin' to build your whole life around living each and every precious day, in the Shining Times of that indescribable Joy! FREEDOM! HooYa!

Well kids... I gotta get camp packed up and loaded. Miles to go to find my camp for tonight...

This trip is winding down... just  three or four days of it left. Then I've got some work to get done to have us ready to hitch up the Eagle... and head out on That Journey. :o)

I'll be back posting regularly... here on my GRVB blog in the next week... I expect I've got many more tales to spin!

Alaska Information... for Thinkin' an Dreamin'...

Hey Folks, I've found a couple sites that'll lay out some info that'd be helpfull... when you get to wanderin' and Boondocking around up here in the Great North...

The first has all the State of Alaska camps laid out on a map... with descriptions and sizes etc... and the second is a site that has distances and more importantly, Alaska Travel Times. Truth is... how long it's gonna take is more important than how far it is.

... and the last thing I'll say on this lil' post is clothing... It's early August here in the Great North... and today... I'm gonna put on my fleece long handles... it's wet... and pretty cool as a result...

When you're picking out your gear for your trip up this way... make for sure and for certain, you're packing Good Rain Gear, boots or shoes that keep your feet DRY... and clothes you can layer and keep yourself protected, whatever the weather.

Makes no sense to me... to come all this way... and then be miserable 'cause you're tryin' to impress everyone with how tough you are... forget that! ... put on the long johns if you're cold... put on the rain gear... and enjoy in spite of the weather.

Some Thoughts on RVing, Traveling, Motorcycle Touring and Parking your RV along the ALCAN

I know a lot of folks are Planning their big RVing the Alaskan Highway trip...

For those rolling north to Alaska... or thinkin' on it... don't hesitate or fret, 'cause you're concerned with places to stop along the way...

Your choices are many... Commercial/private RV parks... Provincial and Territorial Parks... and many and frequent rest areas and plain Ol' widespots plenty sufficient for overnighting as you wander...

You say you've got a "Big Rig"? ... apparently the Canadians think that spaces should be a mite larger in their provincial parks than the forest service does down in the states... to my mind, they've built their sites a whole lot larger than what we have to deal with down "South"... so that's not much of an issue either... less you have a 47' triple wide the size of the space shuttle! :o)

But... even for you there's room! :o)

... and If you're wanting to motel it on a bike... or an old fashioned Road trip in the SUV... there's a heavy choice of motels and Bed and Breakfast outfits all along the way... I don't believe I'd worry 'bout reservations in most places.

... such planning usually just trashes whatever sponteneity you started out with. :o) ... Just go... till you're tired for the day... and then... right close by... you'll find a place you can stop... ain't nobody gonna hassle you much up here... that I can see.

Here's the deal for planning your Alaskan trip... the way I see it... 1. Remember this... it's a LOT bigger than it looks on a map... so give yourself plenty of time... 2. It's a Lonely Road... SOLO... unless you (and the folks around you) simply, absolutely Need you to take the time alone for cleaning out the Stuff in your head... take a friend... you'll be glad you had him... or Her! 3. Line out your money for it... and then stash maybe 25% extra... for just in case :o)

Bottom line? You'll find there's No real shortage of fuel stops... snack stops... view stops... bunk stops... or restraunt stops.

Likely... the only shortage will be in the amount of time you can steal from the rest of your life to know this place... an awesome awesome place.

So... what are you waiting on?
