Heading up the Trail Through Romero Canyon to Romero Pools

The trail takes off, only maybe 3/4 of a mile from camp... for some reason... we wimped out and ran the truck over to the trailhead... ;)

When you leave the trail head... the first thing you have to do is brave the raging waters of... this lil' stream...

*Starting up Romero Canyon*
Ok... not raging... but if you listen real careful... it was gurgling!

Just 'round the bend, just below that Saguaro you turn left and start up a hill. A nice, wide, sandy path. Ah, this'll be an easy stroll you think...

*Along the Trail to Romero Pools*
How-some-ever... the way soon gets narrow, and in places rocky. The chink of a couple dozen walking sticks echos up and down the canyon... as the hikers walk along with a stick in each hand, bracing against the rocks... Chink, chink, chink...

Somewhere up in here is another herd of Desert Bighorn but they eluded us here too. And they post multiple signs, because of the Sheep... that Dogs are NOT allowed on the trail... leashed or otherwise.

Several folks... one lost in the 60's looking hippies sort and three lil' chippie gals apparently, I thought... couldn't read... and went diddy boppin' on up the trail with their mutts...

But, I did get corrected once again. When another old grump... I was chewing on my tongue... Jumped the gals for busting reasonable rules about NO DOGs... Their Reply? "He doesn't THINK! he's a dog."

Oh! That changes EVERYTHING! The rule is ONLY for those critters that KNOW they're dogs. All others are excluded! My Bad! ... Sheesh!

So... the views and the trail makes for a beautiful day. Especially once you manage to separate yourself from the chinking and talking herd. :)

What is it about being out in the bush that makes people holler? I mean, they're walking 6 feet apart... and I can hear and understand every word of their conversation... and I'm a LONG rifle shot away? Then, when I let 'em catch up and I greet 'em with a quiet voice as they pass a few feet away they reply; "I'm great, how are you?" ... so... they hear fine! So... why the hollerin'... without end... I mean... what are they up there for?

Their screeching voices run off any possibility of seeing any of the native residents of the mountain... they can't hear the wind in the grass, or in the trees... they're not about to hear the water gurgling through that desert stream... Lordy... Folks accuse me of talkin' a lot... but... listen here kids... that's only in the Talkin' Places ;) The mountain... is one of those zip your lip and listen to the mountain places. :)

and their eyes... they never leave the ground in front of them... I watched one small group... They passed us going up as I stood gazing at the mountain across the narrow canyon... and capturing some photos... "blah blah blah he sold his house and invested in shares of Dum Dum corporation because they invented a new zip dangle that will change the under capitalized fender market blah blah blah"...

Before we got to the pools... 'cause I was NOT walking with my eyes on the ground... and actually stopping all along the way and Seeing that glorious country again... here they came back... eyes nailed to the gravel at their feet... still rattling... "but the returns on the investment will moderate the losses he experienced in the short sale debacle of the the retro funk apple peeler machinery blah blah blah"...

The voices Never quit... faded into hearing and faded back out... like a truck passing on the freeway...

Sheesh! It would have been histerical if it weren't so sad. :) and then I started giggling... when they passed going down I glanced over at the "money" man... he was wearing a black back pack that didn't appear to have anything in it... It had this real nice embroidered name on the back... NASDAQ  ... :) perfect!

Walking in the mountains... or out in the Desert is not about shouting about your money and investment prowess for all to hear... It's about... or should be about... going almost silent for a bit. Cleaning out all that garbage, and restoring the soul... the heart of you that is your true wealth.

I'm confident... unless they stepped on it... all those yakkers never saw a fraction of what we did... and if I said anything about it to 'em I'd get, if not anger, nothing but a blank stare. They don't and never will Get It.

Putting my boots on the ground in such a place has much the same affect as when I push two wheels through the wind on a ribbon of asphalt... It clears the brain. Puts things in proper perspective... and all, for a little while, is right with the world...

Well... as long as proper separation is maintained from the talkers and the illiterate dog walkers. :)

So... you keep walking... and climbing... and you come to a lil' part of the trail that reminded me of Walters Wiggles in Zion... ;)

Though I gotta say Heidi was kinda grateful there wasn't as many Wiggles! :)

A bit less than halfway up the canyon, almost three miles in and a thousand feet of climbing... you get to the first pools...

*Romero Pools*

So... as a lot of other folks continue on a short ways to some pools where there's bigger falls and some folks swim in a bit warmer weather... we just sat on a rock and enjoyed the lower pools.

Then... started back down... You can take this trail and tie into others, and eventually reach the top of the mountain up at 9,000 feet and more nearly 6,000' higher than these pools... We thought we'd leave that for another day ;)

The way down is faster for some reason... and we rolled down easy... and got passed by a lil' gal RUNNING her way up... I might of chased her in years past... ;) ... chose to just wave today!

*In the Desert, take your shade when you can!*
When you go to the Catalinas at Tucson, walk that Romero Trail. Take yourself plenty of water. Don't hurry. Stop and feel the Desert Breeze on your face. Push the thoughts of money and townie stresses out of your mind and just let the place slow down your pulse. All that crap below will still be there for you when you come down... Just let the mountain give you a lil' bit of what it has.

... and once in a while... just look into the water...

... and let your heart Dream of the Future.

As in the past, you have captured the beauty of the Desert. So sorry the others missed it. Keep on going my friend, love your pics and your prose. Oh, a month and a half until that little stinker gets here. It is a girl in case I didn't tell you.

Ya know those "kids" gotta be trained...the head space from suddden environmental changes leaves nothing behind. Beautiful pics, Brian. I hope to be there one day soon.

You made me laugh (ALOT)with your description of your encounters with the other trail blazers...:))
Some people have no idea how to "become One with their surroundings" like you do. Maybe they will never be able to break from the mold of the lives they have. Glad YOU and Heidi can and do enjoy what's out there.

Ya know, Barney has a point... And I try to accept folks as they are... What can I say, I'm still human, even if I was a cowboy. ;) Some of them just make me scratch my head and wonder. :)

I'll bet that the trail was on Mr. NASDAQ yak yak's bucket list.
_mountain trail hike. Check!

I've seen so many folks who really think that the destination is the reason for the trip.

Naw, the destination is just the excuse for the trip. Kinda like popcorn is the excuse for butter an' salt.

Nice pics.

I've been known to sit quietly at a trailhead for a while so that I can spend my quiet time quietly. It's sad that people cannot let go of their stress, but I don't increase mine by getting too close.
