We left our night camp on Hwy 101, heading for the Redwoods... thinking we'd stay there for a few days before continuing on down the coast... but like much of what we do... our plans changed, as we rolled along...
The fog, rain and difficulty finding camps along the coast this time of year finally turned us inland from Redwoods National Park... where it was too foggy most of the time, to even get any decent pics as we passed through...
'bout the only thing we got was of the Dogs... tryin' to buddy up to Paul and Babe...
|* Look Really close... and you can see the Pups... not too impressed with Paul!*|
See... the thing is... I won't spend $35 for an RV Park site... with shiny bathrooms, full hookups, a community center... and neighbors parked so close they're slide is under my awning!... So... I'm not about to pay that for a gov't campsite... with no water, no hookups at all... no sun for my panels... and the admonition that "The restrooms probably aren't working either!" ... Huh? 35 bucks? ... so... we kept moving...
About that time we decided "OK... time to change directions... and do somthin' else" ... and that's when we made the turn east..
Rolling up Hwy 299 we made a Nite Camp at a lil' place in the Oaks called Big Flat... and continued on the next morning to where the Eagle has nested, at Whiskeytown Lake... west of Redding.
No Hookups... but, between storms we've got sun... we've got all sorts of room, being the off season... and THIS gov't camp is settin' me back the whole of $3.50 a night... now... how do they explain the 10 fold difference? Sheesh... and they're surprised their lil' place is... empty? Well... as Homer would say... DOH!
What can I say... the site itself, I don't think I'd like in the summer... It's made for a marina that sits just below us... so they figure, ever'body is here to be out on their boats... so the sites are side by side... but in the Off season? Hey! We're here all by our lonesome! :o) if you look real close you can see a lil' white spot in the trees off to the right?... that's the Camp Host...
... so... for nesting for a week or two, I'll take it... while our budget can catch back up a mite... and with mostly good weather in our forecast, we've got lots of nice places to walk...
And there's lots of good Roads for the Raider to run around here... Made 'bout an 80 mile run the second afternoon... and yesterday, in the Sun... HooYa!... we rolled up to Mt. Shasta City... Now... if the batteries can just catch up, along with the budget... :o)
The Eagle has nested for a week or so... In Sunny (Mostly) Californ-I-A

You were smart to turn East....101 is not good to travel in rainy and foggy weather. I love the pictures you posted of where you ended up parking...very pretty fall leaves. And that's my husband and my favorite places to park.....cheap and almost empty..nice! Safe travels....in search of the sun.
Brian, you just passed through Weaverville where my family lived for almost 30 years prior to our retirement. Whiskeytown Lake was always my welcome home site when we returned from going somewhere. We have a house in WA where the average rain is 110 inches a year on the Olympic Peninsula. Currently we are ElDorado county east of Sacramento helping with my youngest son's family. If you are stopped anywhere near Sac I would love to actually meet my current favorite author. Ad Addison
nwlambear; Yup! I don't think I'd be very happy right here, in the hustle of the summer... but right now, yesterdays storm is gone, the sky is brite blue... and not a soul around... awesome!
William; we'll likely be stopping for a night or two somewhere... either west near Napa... or east above Placerville... on our way to a winter visit to Yosemite... next week maybe? :o)
Brian am disappointed about redwoods but don't blame u. Too overpriced. Shame no pics. Have a safe trip
