Keeping My Fingers Crossed...

Well... today is the end of my most recent procrastination... I'm up against the end of the Temp Tag on the '99 Cummins we bought a while back... Thing is... to get it registered, I've got to get an emissions test completed...

... and that there is what I've been procrastinating on. Living in Weld county, no test has been needed for better than seven years... but now, with the house gone... and though we are still parked in Weld, our mailing address has been changed to the peoples republic of Larimer county... over in Fort Collins...

... and though they don't require emissions on all their cars... those nasty, smokin' Diesels have to be tested! aaaaarrrrrghh! ... the thing is... Diesels put out heavy, sooty emissions, that don't hardly go anywhere... maybe 20 feet and then that heavy particulate stuff settles out and hits the ground... not floatin' around in the air... like the stuff comin' out of their Lil' Prius go carts... :o) ... but those folks over there... "Can See" it for a bit... so it must be bad... right? ...

Hate to be the one to break it to 'em... but it's the One You Don't See that whacks you! :o)

Anyhoo... I'm heading over to get the test done this morning... so I can get the permanent plates on and be done with it...

So... I better put down the coffee cup... pull on my jeans... and get that Dodge warmed up!
***edit***No need to worry! Passed through with flyin' colors!... tomorrow... the plates! $$$ Ouch!***
Take Good Care

Any idea where I can get an exhaust brake for my '96 2500? Kinda' like to have one for the mountain travel I"d like to do!!

Fred... I'd only put a "Banks" exhaust brake on, after market. Had one on my '98... had a jacobs (factory) on the '06... and will be putting a "Banks" brake on the '99 we have now... check the shops around you for one that sells "Banks"!

brian on the emissions also ,,i dont have any restrictions from the turbo to the tips of the exhaust pipes ,,straight back ,no mufflers ,no catylitic comverts ,,nada nothing ,,three inch pipe ,,not loud either just power if needed ,,have the pump turned up a bit and have 185 horse on the rear wheels ,,can make very black smoke back there if i put it to the cummins .

One of the benefits of living in Wyoming is that we don't have to go through that Bravo Sierra... Just be glad you don't have to meet 2010 emission standards with urea tank and all. I think we'll keep our two diesels running until we die rather than deal with the ever increasing load of crap they keep piling on emission standards.

Adios!

Mike's got it right on the money! Go Wyo!

Down here in El Paso County, CO, I get the good times of getting my '03 tested - always does just fine, just another bite in the wallet.

As regard's Fred's exhaust brake "Where to find?" question, might try Turbo Diesel Register's website if not already done so. Whole web site, forums, etc, dedicated to Dodges with Cummins rattlers. Pretty darned good magazine, too! Fair amount of parts swappin and sales there in the forums.

And, final note, I'll throw in my 2 cents' worth: I went with the PacBrake April '07 when I wanted an exhaust brake on my '03 2500 6 spd H/O, bought-used-in '04, "Man, I love it!" truck. Not had a lick of trouble with it, finally had to do a brake job (front only) on my at 132,000 miles, 110,000 of 'em mine. Course, I don't haul a big fiver or hay or ... just my 7,300# max travel trailer. But, I haul it lots and most of it in the Rockies.

I know everyone's got a preference, Jake, Banks, etc. Just throwing in my vote.

Thanks, Steven from Monument

dont think my little 3 speed auto will take the torque of a engine brake ,maybe an exhaust brake ,maybe, humn ,have to inquire ..would love to have some extra brake as to buy rotors for my dodge is so exspensive ,what with the front hubs and rotors are all one piece ,,$250 or so a piece wow ,,times two ouch ..

John... Putting an "engine" brake in... that's a major reconstruction of the engine itself...

but... the exhaust brake... is outside of the engine so a lot simpler...

The trouble with "Automatics" is... some of 'em, especially the older models, don't lock up, on deceleration... so an exhaust brake won't even work... The newer units have changed that...

I believe that function is in the torque converter... haven't got any sort of an idea... if you can change that part out or not... that's a question for somebody who is a lot more of a "Diesel Head" than me! :o)
